This is a season 3 Vampire Diaries plot. We are starting from basically just after the first episode, with some changes.
After her birthday, and vowing to help find Stefan for her, Damon and Elena discover Stefan in a haze of confusion. He has been brought back to Mystic Falls by a new resident, one who now has the attention of the Scooby gang. the new family even has ties with the Original family who seem to be reappearing faster than Klaus would probably like at times. What they don't realise is that the new residents are bringing a whole new bag of problems with them, which makes the darkness look like child's play.
Upon meeting Katie Daren, an old contact of Damon's, the gang decide her casting a spell to get Stefan back is the best course of action. However Stefan isn't the only thing that is brought to Mystic Falls, cursed many years ago, the Daren witch unknowingly brought back few familiar faces from her own line as well as a darkness. A darkness that makes the original family seem like kittens.
