Damon is self-contained and reserved on the surface most of the time, only letting his emotions through when he's angry - usually at Stefan. He generally acts flippant and arrogant, and constantly plays word games, especially when it comes to dancing around an issue, and even more especially when that issue involves his true feelings on a serious subject. He much rather prefers to hide behind his cocky persona than reveal how he really feels.
Even discounting his vampire abilities, Damon is a master manipulator. He is cunning, self-interested, and amoral, willing to do just about anything to get what he wants. He can be sadistic, taking pleasure in the pain of others. He has no problem taking lives, either human, vampire or werewolf, if it suits his mood or purpose, he can turn on a former friend completely upon betrayal.

Damon was born to Giuseppe and Lily Salvatore on June 28, 1840 in the small town of Mystic Falls, Virginia. He had a younger brother by the name of Stefan, and his father tended to favor Stefan over the more rebellious Damon. In spite of this, the two brothers were very close. He joined the Confederate Army at some point, coming back when he was on leave to spend time at the Salvatore Estate. When Damon first met Katherine Pierce, he left the Confederacy and returned to Mystic Falls to spend more time with her much to his fathers displeasure.
Eventually, by 1865, the Founders’ Council of Mystic Falls grew suspicious of the deaths taking place in the town. They figured out that there were vampires present in the town and decided to take action. Damon was determined to protect Katherine he wanted to give up his human life and spend eternity with her, and he asked Stefan to protect her secret, warning him against telling their father. Unfortunately, Stefan spoke sympathetically of vampires to their father in the hopes of enlisting his help in protecting Katherine. Guiseppe gave Stefan a drink laced with vervain, and Katherine was taken away by those hunting vampires, Damon was scolded by his father for trying to save her. He was furious with Stefan, but agreed to work with him to rescue her. In the midst of their daring plan, they were both shot and killed by Giuseppe, who was ashamed his sons fell for a vampire. They both had Katherine’s blood in their systems, but Damon awakened first and went to Fell's Church, where they were burning the vampires, to witness the fire being set.
When Stefan awakened the next morning, Damon told him that Katherine’s death meant his reason for living was gone, and he wouldn’t complete his transition into a vampire. When Stefan returned, having killed their father and fed on him, he forced Damon to drink from a young woman’s neck, completing his transition. He was not as volatile on blood, though, and he left Stefan’s company, disgusted with how he was acting and angered that Katherine had made him into a vampire as well. It was then that he began to take his revenge on his brother. He spent much of the time after Katherine’s death popping up in Stefan’s life and attempting to destroy whatever happiness he had found. The two brothers became bitter enemies, the divide between them only deepening with time.
More than a hundred years later, Damon returns to Mystic Falls to free Katherine, who he believes is locked in a tomb there, after getting the witch Emily to trap the vampires in the church rather than letting them burn to death. Damon meets Elena Gilbert and, still hating his brother, decides to bring havoc to her relationship with Stefan. He was willing to do anything to make Stefan feel the pain he’d felt after losing Katherine and so to get to Elena he turned his attention to Caroline. He began feeding off of her and sleeping with her, manipulating her mind to keep her under control and make her accepting of him routinely drinking her blood. He presented himself as her boyfriend and used the excuse to put himself in close proximity to Elena so that he could drop more manipulative comments and hint at Stefan’s past with Katherine. He also had Caroline bring him to Elena’s house, manipulating the situation socially so that he could be invited inside for dinner, meaning that Damon could now enter Elena’s home unchecked.
It was soon revealed to everyone what his real intentions for returning back to Mystic Falls is and when he finds out that Katherine is not in the tomb and has been alive the entire time, he finds comfort in Elena and it’s not long before he finds himself falling for her. Not long after he finally begins to move on from his past love Katherine turns up and surprises them all. Damon eventually encounters Katherine in the Salvatore Boarding House, where the two share a heated kiss. He stops them before they have sex, asking her honestly if she’ll just tell him the truth. She tells him that she’s never loved him, which literally rockets him off the deep end. He shows up at Elena’s house drunk and angry, demanding that Elena admit she has feelings for him. He forces her to kiss him, but when she denies him he seems momentarily emotionally broken.
The arrival of Klaus and the originals presented Damon with the perfect opening to get to know Elena. When Klaus compelled Stefan to do his bidding he is left to pick up the pieces with the girl they have both fallen for. This couldn't be more perfect for Damon, for the first time he has Elena to himself but she is only interesting in finding his brother.
