Elena is a compassionate person, often feeling guilt and concern for suffering or pain she did not cause and frequently tries so go out of her way to help people. However, this normally means she puts her own life before others, especially if it is some she cares about. Although, she is very big on trust and does not trust easily if you do not open up to her, or hurt her or anyone she cares about.
In school she was often seen as the sociable and popular girl in school, but more so before her parents died. Despite this, she can be incredibly stubborn to the point of being reckless but only in an attempt to look after the people she cares about. Since meeting the Salvatores and going through everything that has happened in the past few years, her slightly more sweet and innocent demeanor has faded and was replaced with a much more tough personality.

Elena was born and raised in Mystic falls, to the parents of Isobel Fleming and John Gilbert. However, Isobel was only a teen when she gave birth to Elean and ended up giving her up for adoption. John Gilbert, then allowed his brother Grayson Gilbert to adopt Elena with his wife Miranda Gilbert. Two years later, Grayson and Miranda Gilbert had a baby boy called Jeremy, and Elena grew up in this family having no clue that she was adopted or that her biological father was her adoptive uncle.
At around seventeen, Elena met Stefan Salvatore not long after her parents death. At first, Stefan kept being his secret about being a vampire from her very well, until Damon Salvatore started planted hints about his lies in her mind. It was not until Stefan told her about him being a vampire, did the two finally get back together. Although, things did not get any better from here. Damon wanted to find Katherine Pierce, who turned out to be Elena's doppelganger, and was so obsessed by it almost got Elena killed. It turned out that Katherine was not in there, and the seal was not put back up which then let all of the tomb vampires out.
It was then that Katherine returned to Mystic falls, and began imitating Elena. She pretended to be Elena and kissed Damon, who had developed feelings for Elena. She also cut off John's fingers while pretending to be Elena. No one understood why Katherine had returned to Mystic Falls, but it soon became evident after everyone began to realize why Katherine had turned Caroline, and was looking for the moonstone and even more clear when Elena had been kidnapped by Rose and Trevor. Rose had explained to Elena who the originals were, and why they wanted to sacrifice Elena.
It escalated from there when Elijah came to town, and explained his plan to try and kill Klaus. In secret from Stefan and Damon, Elena made a deal to let herself be sacrificed so that Elijah could could kill Klaus, and in return Elijah would give her an elixir that would bring her back to life and that he would protect everyone she cares about. When Stefan and Damon heard about this, they were in far from just against it, and Damon acted irrationally and force fed Elena his blood. Elena hated him after this as she never wanted to be a vampire, but the sacrifice went ahead not long after Klaus came to Mystic Falls.
During the sacrifice, John traded his life for Elena's so she would come back human which she did. Elijah had fallen for Klaus's lies and Klaus had daggered him like he had the rest of his family and had managed to break the curse. In the mean time, Damon had got bitten by a were wolf and was slowly dying, so Stefan went to Klaus asking for his blood after finding out his blood is the cure. Klaus had only given Stefan his blood after he had drank human blood so Stefan would turn into the ripper Klaus had known him as in the 1920's. Klaus then gave his blood to Katherine, to take to Damon who then caught Damon and Elena kissing. Stefan then left with Klaus, but was found later on by Katie Daren who spelled him back to Mystic Falls. This was a shock since Elena and Damon had been searching for him for most of the Summer, and Elena had unwillingly developed feelings for Damon after pretty much giving up hope of Stefan's return.
For now she is torn between the two brothers, knowing that choosing one would split them both apart.
