The Daren Family History
The Daren's are a family of witches and hunters which have been around for a very long time. The Daren's have a long line of hunter brothers, who are meant to help protect their sister witches. At 17, the girls in the family gain the memories of their previous life's to help them with the current one, to learn and grow their powers for the next generation. As far as they have experienced since 1534, they are the only witches to do such a ritual and receive this knowledge.
The way the Daren line works is that in every generation there is one boy followed by one girl born to the female of the generation, the current generation are Katie and her brother Josh .. This set of Daren siblings is different, Josh had a daughter, MacKenzie. This has only happened once before, to the first siblings of the Daren line, Clara and Hugh. Clara, witch who is a past life of Katie's and the most powerful of their line, cared for her brother's daughter whilst he was off protecting the world of the supernatural... just like Katie is guardian of MacKenzie.
Josh and Katie lost their parents early and were raised by their Uncle Ryan and gran. Josh and Katie were born in Mystic Falls but after Katie was born and their father died, their mother, Ella, took them to Scotland. As far as Katie knows she and Josh have the same father. The siblings spent their childhood in Glasgow, Scotland. They lived with her mum, with her Uncle Ryan popping in every so often. He would travel back to her birth town to visit his gran who still lived there. Josh's uncle travelled a lot and would always bring him things back from the places he visited. He was an archaeologist and a professor of such. He specialised in occult symbols and history, something which most of the men in the Daren family seemed to do. Josh was always, and is still, close with his Uncle Ryan. In 1997 Ella died whilst away with Uncle Ryan and their grandmother. Although they never knew what really happened, Ella was turned into a vampire and has recently made her way to Mystic Falls and back to her children. Katie and Josh went to live with their Uncle Ryan for most of Josh's life after this. Katie went at 15 ( just before her powers developed) to live with her gran in Mystic Falls, however Josh stayed with Ryan after he left school and at school holidays.
After that the two siblings went their separate way. Josh eventually met MacKenzie's mother, Nikki, and wasn't aware of MacKenzie. When Mac turned 13, she came to know her aunt Katie - Josh hadn't admitted to his sister that he had a daughter because of the history of their family. At 14 her mum was killed and, since Josh was hunting, MacKenzie came to live Katie. It wasn't easy at first, but now the two get on very well and have a bond that will deepen when they start to share the magic stuff later. They lived briefly in Washington DC together, the Katie left her job and they moved to Mystic Falls.
