Before turning into a vampire, Katherine was a sweet and caring person. Although she was banished to England by having an illegitimate child, she adapted to her new surroundings quickly, learning the language and culture quickly. But as she felt danger lurking closer in the masks of Klaus and Elijah Mikaelson, she fought back hard. Her self preservation and will to live was the main thing that kept her alive.
As she was turned she learned that manipulating and toying with people was a great way to get what she needed in life. Since she was on the run from Niklaus, she learned not to care for others and always put herself first. Katherine is capable of whatever, as long as she gets what she wants.

Katherine was born into a wealthy Bulgarian family in the 15th century. When she was about sixteen years old she became pregnant by an unknown man and her family disowned her. After her daughter was born, her father took the baby , claiming that it is for the best. Katherine was then banished to England where she met two brothers who changed her life completely - Niklaus and Elijah Mikaelson. She was quite attracted to both of them, but when she found out what they were and what they wanted from her, she escaped. Her friend - Trevor who had fallen in love with her - helped her, telling her to stay in a cottage in the middle of the woods. When Katherine arrived there, she met a vampire called Rose, who insisted on turning Katherine in.
While being locked up, Katherine tried to commit suicide. She preferred death to Klaus plans. But Rose force-fed her blood, healing her. Katherine seeing the opportunity to kill herself again, hung herself with a rope. But instead of dying, she woke up, transitioning into a vampire. She knew now that running will never be enough. After Rose tried to attack her, since Katherine had brought death upon them all, Katherine pulled the cabin's owner as a shield in front of her, what resulted in her death. As Katherine drained the poor woman, she completed her transition and escaped. After being on the run for a while, she returned to Bulgaria. She found that all her family had been brutally murdered, what implied that Klaus was now after her.
Then Katherine realized she had to leave her previous life behind. Few years later Katherine returned to Bulgaria again, making sure that Klaus was now off her trail. She went back to find her daughter, to bring her back with her. After searching every village and every cottage near her birthplace, Katherine understood the following, either Klaus had killed her daughter. She decided to leave and never return.
Three hundred years later, Katherine had already settled in Mystic Falls. She has made friends, enemies and many others. Then she met the Salvatore brothers. The two whom she fell in love with and played around with. After the Founding Families were close to finding out about vampires, Katherine thought about a vicious plan - locking all town vampires, the ones she created, into a tomb. After she had struck a deal with George Lockwood, to get his help to fake her death, the Salvatores intervened. Their father - Giuseppe - who was also in the council, found out that Katherine was a vampire. When she was taken away by Giuseppe, Damon came for her rescue, so did Stefan. Both of them got killed by their own father who couldn't believe that they protected a vampire. Katherine was taken into the church, but George Lockwood saved her.
During the years, Katherine had always kept her eye on Stefan and his actions. Now that her doppelganger Elena has come to picture everything has changed and Katherine had to make her way back to Mystic Falls. She made her appearance known to everyone in the town, by turning Caroline Forbes into a vampire and triggering Tyler Lockwood's werewolf curse. She did that because of Klaus's hybrid ritual. She even lured Klaus into Mystic Falls, letting him now that the new doppelganger was alive. She on the other hand left town to escape the hybrid's fury.
